Wild Birds and Avian Influenza in Africa

FAO Surveillance Program : 2006/07 Campaign

TWithin the framework of the FAO-Technical Cooperation Programmes (TCP), a second round of the surveillance program is curretly implemented in 17 countries.
Geographical distributions of sampling sites as well as sampling periods have been selected to cover the seasonal patterns of waterbird migration over Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. These epidemiological investigations target natural sites where waterbirds of various geographical origins (breeding grounds) congregate and mix, hence providing the opportunity for AIV to be transmitted between various host populations and spread over extensive ranges.
Study species have been selected among bird families recognised as major AI reservoirs (notably Anseriformes and Charadriiformes), in both Eurasian and Afro-tropical bird communities. A restricted number of species are targeted in each study site to maximise the number of samples collected per species.
In addition, potential "bridge" species have also been identified for sampling, i.e. peri-domestic species that mix with wild waterbirds and which also frequent farms and habitations, including areas where poultry is reared. For this second campaign, both cloacal and tracheal swabs are collected from wild birds. Partial duplicate sampling is performed in the field, in order to submit samples to both national and international reference laboratories.
