Wild Birds and Avian Influenza in Africa

Satellite tracking

With support of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and USGS (U.S. Geological Survey), a satellite tracking program is implemented in 3 African countries for 4 Wild Ducks species in order to improve our understanding of wild ducks behaviour and migratory routes.

Surveillance Program

◊ In the context of the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza - H5N1 virus through Eurasia during 2005, a surveillance study of wild bird was launched in early 2006, within the framework of regional Technical Cooperation programs of FAO. Field surveillance operations are conducted by Wetland International, CIRAD and national partners in 20 countries of Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Monitoring Program

◊ With the support of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a monitoring program is planned to be implemented for 3 years in 5 African countries by CIRAD and partners, aiming at improving our understanding of the host ecology of Avian Influenza virus in tropical regions, and the potential for its circulation and the persistence over the African continent.
